Integrated Pest Management – the Homeowner's Role

Getting the upper hand on ants often calls for more than one approach. Research has shown that combining two or more types of treatments provides the most effective and long-lasting control by professionals. Such a multi-pronged method is called Integrated Pest Management (IPM). IPM may incorporate two or more product formulations, often with different active ingredients, and include different treatment methods.

IPM requires responsibility on the part of the homeowner, who should take simple steps to prevent nuisance ants. These include sanitation measures, such as cleaning up spilled food and beverages, diligently taking out the trash and removing edibles that attract ants, such as pet food.

Outside, people should seal or caulk cracks, crevices, door jams and windows frames that provide entry for ants. They should also keep gutters clean to prevent moisture inside walls, and remove firewood lying against or near a building. Finally, trimming adjacent trees and shrubs will deprive ants of the natural bridges they often use to invade homes.
